Dr.
Foster began his career at Lakeland College in July 1989.
He was part of the faculty which opened the present campus in
1990 and has taught university level history courses since that time.
Franklin was born in Lloydminster, grew up on a family farm
nearby, and graduated Lloydminster Composite High School.
For you students, Dr. Foster was himself a successful student. He won scholarships or academic awards in 10 of the 11 years he was a full-time university student; including the University of Alberta First Class Standing Prize, an Ontario Graduate Scholarship Award, and a Social Sciences and Research Council Scholarship for meritorious historical research. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts from the University of Alberta, and a Master’s Degree and a Doctoral Degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
Dr. Foster began his teaching career with the County of Vermilion River, teaching high school in Dewberry and Marwayne. Later, he taught at CFB Cold Lake and was part of the staff that opened the Grand Centre Regional High School, where he taught for 4 years. He has also taught at Queen’s University, Red Deer College, and immediately prior to coming to Lakeland College he was principal and teacher at Tulliby Lake School. He has also been employed by the University of Alberta, the Department of National Defense, and the National Archives of Canada.
His publications include: John E. Brownlee: A Biography; Bordering on Greatness: A History of Lloydminster’s First Century; and The Trail of 1903, He was a contributing author to the Canadian Encyclopedia and to Alberta Premiers of the Twentieth Century.
Dr. Foster was
active in the Lloydminster Community, serving on the Board of the
Lloydminster Public Library, on the Board and as President of the Rotary
Club of Lloydminster, and on the Board and as President of the
Lloydminster and District Centennial Commemorative Association.
Dr. Foster and his wife Dorothy have worked together as a team for more
than 31 years, including owning and operating two successful small
businesses; their present company is Foster Learning Inc., which designs
and publishes both web-based and print publications.
Dorothy is also known to generations of students as the nice lady
who brings delicious baked treats to class at the end of each term.
