The Bretton Woods Conference - 1944
Even though World War II was still very much a going
concern, representatives of 41 countries met in the small
New Hampshire, USA town of Bretton Woods to establish a
framework for the world following the hoped for defeat of
the Fascist regimes of Germany, Italy and Japan.
Something
of the scope and import of the conference can be gathered by
the fact that from it came those institutions which today
are known as:
- the
World Bank
- The International Monetary Fund
(IMF)
- The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade
(GATT)
aka The World Trade Organization
